Some of you might remember a post I did a long while back on the Tommy Hilfiger Feast Interruptus ad. Loved everything about it - the wardrobes, the styling, the script, the music, and especially, the car. The old-school Jeep complete with wood paneling in the perfect navy hue and packed to the brim with plaid, vintage trunks, and a floppy-eared bloodhound. Prep mecca.
In another movie I know I loved but cannot for the life of me remember right now... will get back to you on that.
And then one of my favorite photographers - Trent Bailey - posted this darling image he took on Facebook and inspiration struck. I'd been forgetting to blog about my dream car for months now.

With all the lugging of large items and furniture I do for styling projects, I'm in desperate need of an SUV. I traded in my Jeep Cherokee last year for a far more fuel-efficient Toyota Corolla. And even though the Cherokee had upwards of 150k miles, lacked working air conditioning, and smelled like my puppies, I sure do miss that overused lug.
And this Wagoneer - well, it's classic, unpretentious, and 100% American. I can't imagine how awful the gas mileage would be on one of these beauties, but I really want one.
What's your dream car?
Wow that is weird, I had/have the same cars haha. When I turned 15 my Dad bought me a Jeep Cherokee. In college once the Jeep was completely unreliable and would only crank when it wanted I got a Toyota Corolla. I miss my Jeep but love the better gas mileage and and air conditioner that cools off before you make it to your destination.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother drives a 1987 Wagoneer (older than I am!) and it's such a cute vintage prep look!
ReplyDeleteLove the vintage/classic Jeep. They don't design cars like they used to (literally just had this discussion with my husband yesterday when I pointed out an ugly car in the parking lot). For me, my dream car would be a Mini Cooper all the way. Cream and black baby.
ReplyDeleteOh nostalgia... I love these too! In college, a family I summer nannied for on the Cape had one of these navy and wood beauties that I used to tool around in. They are absolute boats, but straight out of the preppy handbook. They just don't make cars like that anymore, sigh... I drive a blue Santa Fe, but if/when I upsize, I <3 the Lexus GX. Just give me a big box on wheels. ;)
ReplyDeleteYou should get one, or we should go halfsies. I want a car and would pretty much drive anything. But I'd rather have a boat.
ReplyDeleteI should just get a bicycle.
i have a mustang gt that i love and have always wanted but unfortunately is an impractical car. i can barely drive it since i'm short, nothing fits in it, my dog bailey is scared of how loud it is, the insurance is expensive and it gets horrible gas mileage. my dream car is a 1966 shelby cobra 427, which is quite possibly the most impractical car ever made, but so beautiful. otherwise i want a big white suv. :)
ReplyDeleteIn a perfect world, where accidents don't happen, right? Growing up a gas station in my home town had a run down old convertible from the 30's or 40's. A slick little red number with a convertible white roof. But with the realities of life, I'll stick with my Honda Accord. Hello wonderful side crash test ratings and side airbags!
ReplyDeleteI had a Jeep Grand Wagoneer and I absolutely LOVED it! It was navy blue and looked just like the Hilfiger one! At Christmas we would tie the tree onto the roof to bring it home from the tree lot and I would put a big wreath on the front. I felt very safe and in control with the big steering wheel. After child number 3 came along I had to get something different...so sad! I ended up with...sad to say...a Town & Country van. The only reason I got the T&C was because I could get it with wood sides! I really wish they would make cars like this again. They hold positively everything. Good luck on your hunt for finding one!
ReplyDeleteOne of my best guy friends has been longing for a Woody for as long as I've known him! They have such a vintage cool vibe. Happy Monday!

i grew up with jeep wagoneers and to this day, they're still my favorite car. both my parents and my grandparents had one. i wish they still made the grand wagoneers!
ReplyDeleteWe had a Wagoneer! At he time it was just old, but now it's the perfect not-too-pretentious WASPy car:)

There are certain cars that have that old but cool feeling and the Wagoneer is certainly one of them, love them.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted an "old", or should I say vintage? Mercedes. My dad had a 280 when I was a kid and I always dreamed that it would be my car, olive/grey on the outside, black leather inside, I would LOOOOVE to have that car. But he sold it before I even started driving :(
Absolutely agree with you on The Romantics- I wanted to love it, and I liked it, but as you said, it was quite depressing!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! You're a daily read, but honest to goodness, you moved to the top of the list today! Wagoneer is like the essence of all prep. I think you need two. One for your mountain home and then one for your summer home. Two different colors obviously. Ugh, I love!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this car! It's so charming!!

I have a MAJOR obsession with wagoners!! Like major major. My mom bought me a cookie jar, rod iron art work and a fan...all wagoneer inspired, and the I told her enough is enough. Now I just need the actual car!
ReplyDeletemy very first car was my parent's old Navy grand wagoneer. I wish we still had it! love love love this car!
ReplyDeleteIt is like you are in my head! I too want a Wagoneer. I had an Audi wagon for about a year and miss it every single day. Wagons are just the *perfect* picnic-ing, hauling my art stuff, throwing the dog in the back for a road trip cars!
ReplyDeleteI love my "89 Waggy!!! Its my daily run-around!!! :) Throw a little MatchBox 20 in the player and I am in my own world. :)
ReplyDeleteLove Woodies! A few other movies I've seen them in are, The Vow, Baby Boom, He's just not into you, Great Outdoors...
ReplyDeleteI grew up with Jeep Wagoneers, my grandfather owned some and for awhile my parents borrowed a yellow one, we all called 'ol yeller. They just keep going and going!
ReplyDeleteThis post brought all sorts of childhood memories back :)

I too am in love with the Grand Wagoneer ... or rather the IDEA of one ! I actually bought a 1988 one for my son two years ago with the idea that he and my husband would "fix it up". It ran ... but needed a full restoration .... Not the best idea I've ever had! After two years of "puttering" (ie: working on the restoration) and 8 (yes - eight) miles per gallon fuel economy ... we finally gave up and just sold it. My husband and I both cried ... my son ... well, he traded to a newer sedan with a/c and all the bells and whistles ... and now - he wished he had the Jeep (fully restored of course)! The moral of this story is .... If you buy one, buy one that's already restored ... then buy stock in a fuel company!
ReplyDeleteWow! Beautiful pictures. I just love your blog. Not sure yet which car I want to drive but those pictures make me wish I had a wagoneer :D
ReplyDeleteThat navy Jeep with the wood might just be the coolest vehicle, ever! But I still love me some boxy Volvo wagon! I always thought they had panache! Mine's silver, like almost everybody else's.
