...because so far, this is how i feel.

i know it's new and perhaps people will figure out the "best way" to use it. but so far this sudden craze just reminds me of  the scene in mean girls where regina has two conspicuous holes in her sweater and because she's regina george, everyone else starts doing it. similarly...

vine is made by twitter so it must be amazing? one big blogger signs on, feeds to instagram, and the next thing you know, everyone is doing. and i'm totally at fault! i even made a personal account and we have one for the everygirl. (anyone in social media can attest you have to lock in those usernames stat before you end up alainakaz_123_ilikepuppies). i just feel there is already so much happening with blogging, facebooking, tweeting, instagramming, vimeo-ing, tumblr-ing... do we really need vine-ing? reeeeally? i could more so see how it is valuable if there's no time limit on the video and bloggers and people could use it as a personal tool for video editing that they can then share on their other social media. do we have to follow one another on the app itself? it's too much to keep up with! and sadly, if you're in this industry, you have to keep up or you're left behind! like it is in any industry i suppose.

ok, i'll get off my soapbox and stop venting. what do you think of the new app? are you into it? by all means, sell me on its advantages! i just know that so far i haven't seen one vine video that offered me something a still shot of the same thing couldn't have also provided viewers.

update: ok, for further investigation, i gave it a go and made my first video. i'm even bored watching it.  thank goodness tuck and fi are so cute. hah will try harder next time...

I was flipping through Netflix over the weekend determined to watch something new and not rely on one of my favorites. I stumbled upon Sabrina, the original 1954 Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart version and decided to give it a whirl. I've never been a huge fan of black and white, old films–to be honest Breakfast at Tiffany's, Casablanca, and Citizen Kane all were a bit over my head...–but i thoroughly enjoyed Sabrina. Probably because of the love triangle. Who doesn't love a good love triangle? And all the references to Paris! And the fact that Paris transformed Sabrina from an innocent, naive, ignorant girl into a stylish, headstrong woman, as it tends to do... I definitely recommend giving this one a try if you've never seen it. The opening scene where she tries to kill herself because a certain man doesn't notice her was dramatic to say the least, but I promise it gets better after that. Bogart has quite a few funny lines. I chuckled.

Weekend in Instagram

four new amazing women joined team everygirl this week as spring writing interns. danielle and i are finally getting the hang of having help and we even prepared and had a little treat waiting for them on their first day. birchboxes, rifle paper co. notepads, hot pink le pens from design darling's shop, and our go-to anthropologie monogrammed mugs. we had them trained and efficiently working in no time!

i was able to make it to my friend allison's engagement party on friday night despite the sad sad state of tuck (who was not left home alone unsupervised, i assure you). allison is the first of my close friends to wed and the first friend wedding i'm standing up to, so it was really exciting to all come together my best ladies to simply celebrate and have a great time. friday's event was like a mini wedding complete with sit down dinner and dance floor. after that hefty glass of wine, i was finally able to relax a little given the previous day's event. granted i did have to duck out early to get back to my furry friend.
 

the office is almost done... still have to repaint but all of the other elements have pretty much come together. i realized what was missing from the gallery wall was more PINK. hot pink. so i added this canvas print from birdaria. you feel me? i feel you. much better i think.

and to give you all an update on mr. tuck. he went into the vet for a follow-up on saturday at which point his drain came out and bandages came off. we tried the tshirt method of preventing him from licking his wounds instead of the cone. he reminded me of an 80s teenager complete with tied-up baggy shirt and bad perm. alas, that wily dog wiggled his snout into the top hole of the shirt and got at them, so the cone is back. but he's healing well and feeling much better!

damn you, universe!

...and i was having such a good week! you all know my dear cockapoo tucker? of course you do.

well yesterday afternoon i took him, his sister fiona, and their best best friend petunia (an 8-lb havanese) for a walk. when we came back in, i let them run up the front stairwell to my apartment on the third floor, only to realize the pitbull-lab mix that lives next door got out and was attacking fiona. tucker was in on it before i knew it, and no matter how hard i tried to pull the dogs apart, the neighbor's dog just kept lunging. i even opened my front door and shoved my dogs inside but the other dog was resilient and before i knew it we were all in my entryway. after about a minute of sprawling across the floor, trying to separate the animals, finally getting tucker into the bedroom with the door closed, and fiona and petunia into the bathroom with the door closed (tiny petunia managed to stay out of the scuffle, and thank GOD the big dog never went for her), all the while screaming "help" until my neighbor appeared from the basement where she had been doing laundry... ahh it was scary. talk about adrenaline.

after the animals were separated, i checked on them to see if and where they were bleeding. tucker had three very large, deep open wounds on his chest and armpit area (i'll spare you the open wound pictures)... i could literally see into him... i can't even explain it. it was horrifying. i saw petunia and fiona were fine. i grabbed tucker and fiona and went to the ER vet (wasn't positive fiona wasn't cut anywhere so i brought her in case). two hours later, he was put under, cleaned out, stitched up, and now has a drain sticking out of his armpit, a half-body cast/bandage, and a cone for three weeks, and pills that will likely make him sick... poor guy was up most of the night crying (i was up with him) and even now, he's sitting next to me huffing out little whimpers as i write...

i don't know if it's the cone or the pain. i assume both.

but what a man, taking the brunt of it to protect his two little ladies. fiona's been cuddling with him since we came home and slept next to him all night. wish us luck over the next three weeks. i'll keep ya'll posted.

Belle: The Living Room Rug Debacle

Behold, the transformation of my living room. I am aware trying three different rugs in the matter of a few months is ridiculous and I don't advise anyone do this. But I'm not crazy. I had my reasons. The good news is I love the way this room has come together. And it's nearly finished...

Above you can see the apartment before moving in. A whole lot of beige going on.

You may recall the beige plague was remedied rather quickly. The room transformed with Behr's Classic Silver.

With furniture and art. It's better... I suppose. When I moved in the summer, I brought my living room rug with me, an 8x10 graphic Moroccan flatweave from West Elm that is no longer in stores (see similar style here). I love this rug, but it was just too dark given the sofa and wall colors.

So I perused West Elm for other options and decided on this light, bright, ultra cozy Fair Isle style. Only silly me assumed my brown rug was a 9x12, so that's what I ordered, only to realize my brown rug was in fact an 8x10 and this new fair isle rug was ginormous. Fortunately, so is the room, so I was going to make it work. And I loved how it brightened the room. Tucker agreed.

Then long story short, things kind of went awry, I thought I was going to have to move, and I came to the realization that the ginormous 9x12 fair isle rug would never fit into any other apartment, so I returned it. Only to realize I would not be moving... cool. Doesn't change the fact that I wouldn't be here forever and as I said, the rug was so big it wouldn't fit anywhere else. So I looked to my other favorite rug source, the online retailer RugsUSA. I was debating between a few graphic options, but ultimately decided on this twist of a chevron pattern. I kept my colorblock Stone Textile pillows, added in a fun spotted pillow from Furbish, switched out the art for my simple European prints, and added in a crazy pouf that has a sort of southwestern vibe from Lulu and Georgia... things are finally coming along! Totally neutral but still feminine thanks to the mirrored sconces.

So we have a winner.

i know it's gonna be alright

as we all know, the past month and a half has been, well, let's just say "down" for lack of a better word. and even in the new year, i haven't been feeling great health-wise. completely worn out, i feel like my body has been fighting something since the ball dropped at midnight two weeks ago. i'm blaming it on all the cookies and wine consumed over the holidays combined with a good dose of stress. i've been trying day after day to get back into my kick-butt workaholic life-is-short-so-enjoy-it routine and mentality, but so far, no dice.

and then last tuesday, this tweet went up:

the message popped up in my inbox and i'm pretty sure the next two minutes were spent expelling a high-pitched scream so loud and excited dogs in michigan heard me. then i picked up my phone, dialed danielle, and continued making that noise until i managed to get the words out: "we're. in. vanity. fair! in the actual magazine in print! PRINT!"

true story. funny thing is i had this magazine in my hands earlier in the day while at the dentist, but i skipped right over this to cut ahead to the article on lena dunham.

but i digress. for those of you who don't know. i graduated with a magazine journalism degree from syracuse, and my goal in life since the age of 16 was to work at vanity fair. it's the end-all, be-all magazine in my eyes, covering everything from business and politics to fashion and celebrity. led by longtime editor-in-chief graydon carter, they do it all, and they do it all well. between this and forbes, i'm reminded of what a crazy great year we've had. it gave me the refocus i've been needing to push myself, continue working on the everygirl - a job i love that i created for myself (ahem blog name shout-out ahem), and remind myself that i'm one part of something really special. and i'm really really lucky for all that. no, this bit of press wasn't a magic cure to feeling down, and yes, i've felt still felt a little blue and a lot exhausted since last tuesday (a redeye back from san francisco this weekend didn't help-never again.), but that is our brand and our names in my favorite magazine. and despite the hardships that i've faced the past six weeks, i have to keep telling myself, that's life. sometimes you're up and sometimes you're down. and in the words of miss ellie goulding,

"anything could happen
i know it's gonna be alright."

go ahead. raise the volume, dance a lil', and feel good.

I love a good styling project!

...almost as much as I love Joss and Main. I'm telling you: the flash sale home decor site and West Elm are currently rivaling for who gets to be featured in my home more.
