"Always dress like you're going to run into your ex." // Thoughts on Men's Fashion

Last week I heard what might quite possibly be one of the most brilliant concepts. "Always dress like you're going to run into your ex." And wait for it... it was a man who told me this. A very well-dressed man at that. It was his response to my compliment on his attire. I love it.

While this obviously applies to both men and women, I love knowing there are men out there who put some extra thought into what they put on every day rather than grabbing their solitary pair of jeans and crinkled Gap button-down. Granted, I love the Gap. But did anyone see Crazy, Stupid, Love? Ryan Gosling's: "Say it with me. I'm better than the Gap!" It made me chuckle. Mainly because I do wear Gap. Anyway, I digress...

Men's fashion doesn't have to be crazy. It's amazing what a simple sweater over a collared shirt, or a tailored button-down with tie (with jeans!), or a sport coat over a tee can do. Men are men. They are naturally sexy. Doesn't matter if their hair is a bit messy or their face is scruffy. They don't have to wear make-up. Or bras. Or Spanx. Or spend hours curling or straightening their hair. So it's nice when they take an extra five minutes putting together an unwrinkled, well-fitting outfit. Invest in one nice shirt, splurge on an amazing pair of shoes, add a couple sweaters to your wardrobe that don't have crewneck collars. Others will take notice.

  6. I think what I love most about these (besides the fact that I L-O-V-E Henry Cavill) is that none of these men look like they are trying too hard. It really doesn't take much. And I think this is a great concept for anyone to dress by (also love the comment "Every outfit is an opportunity").

  7. Ryan Gosling's wardrobe in Crazy, Stupid, Love was absolutely amazing. Granted I love to look at Ryan Gosling no matter what he is wearing, his outfits in that movie made him so much more sexy. Ever since watching that movie with the bf, he has been stepping up his game a bit. I think that Gap comment got his attention!

  8. thanks for the post. Okay, it's official, I've gotta watch Crazy, Stupid, Love. I love that quote, "I'm better than the GAP". Also, guys do have it easier, much easier, pressed chinos and nice shirt and shoes and they're good to go.

  10. I love this! I love men's fashion more than I love women's fashion (mainly because I think I love the men inside the clothes more...). But it's so true. When men put a little bit more time into their morning routine, people do take notice.

  13. Hahahaha I LOVE this....and I think it's going to be my new style mantra. Funnily enough, in the last year, the bf has taken a major interest in refining his personal style. When he heard the "Be better than the GAP" quote when we watched Crazy, Stupid, Love, it was like redemption for him.

Oh, and the eye candy in this post is totally making my day. So thanks for that. :)

  14. I think every guy and every girl needs to read this post. My mother raised me to dress as if I might run into the right person - the right person to date, the right person to marry, the right person who might help me land that BIG job ... just the right person. I have yet to tell her how much I appreciate this advice - I have run into countless people (including exes, girlfriends of exes ...) that make that extra few minutes in front of the mirror worth it. And I can appreciate a man who does the same!

  15. I loved this, and I love that advice! Having run into an ex, once in sweaty gym clothes and another time in a sequined skirt and cute ensemble, I can definitely attest - it's much better when it's the latter.

And yes, boys... You are better than the Gap!!

  16. Umm, I haven't seen the movie, but knowing that quote definitely has me adding it to my list! My husband has been adding a sweater to his normal dress shirt and slacks, and I notice that it makes a difference!

  17. If any of my exes looked like them... I'd be running BACK to them. Not just into them. And thank you! I have forwarded this post to my boyfriend.

  21. GREAT philosophy!
Sometimes just the extra 5 minutes makes us walk a little taller, hold our head a little higher, and maybe even strut :)

  25. Um, yes... this mantra is great motivation to dress well, whether or not your ex lives in the same city! Besides, we've all got pics on facebook these days. Dressing well means more confidence... and less de-tagging!
