At first I thought it was a fad, but the Moroccan pouf continues to pop up in the pages of shelter magazines month after month. No doubt they look fun and add an extra oomph to any room, but I've questioned whether they are really worth the $300-500 price tag. After some research, I've learned that due to the quality of leather and the detailed embroidery, a single pouf can take 4-7 days to make. Once completed, these handmade, multitasking poufs can serve as a small table, additional seating, or a footrest. And as you see from the images above, they really can work with any style of decor, from traditional to contemporary to a more casual space. Put one in your living room, office, bedroom, playroom, sunroom... I'm beginning to think their versatility, quality, and history really do make them an investment piece to consider.
So what do you think: fad or investment? Do any of you own a pouf? Do you actually use it?
Where to Get a Pouf:
Serena and Lily ----> $395
Jonathan Adler ----> $275
Pieces ----> $295
Imports from Marrakesh ----> custom colors, $150-200*
*we have a winner on the affordability scale!
My grandparents have Moroccan poufs since I was a child. If they were in style 26 years ago and still are today, I'd say it's an investment piece.
ReplyDeleteI still love the pouf!! Always have, always will. Fabulous post!

I have been wondering the exact same thing. Especially due to Furbish now carrying them in a gorgeous luggage brown color. Still can't quite decide what I think.
ReplyDeleteI orginally thought fad, but I'm coming around to fab:) I kinda want one!
ReplyDeleteLike the look but I'm going to go with-Fad. I know it's been reintroduced a few years ago but I think it will fade out and then come back at a later date.
ReplyDeleteI think fad...especially the bright colored/metallic poufs. Maybe a nice brown or black pouf can stand the test of time though. Although, I don't think they are practical enough to warrant spending that kind of cash on one!
ReplyDeleteThey are just to cute to give up.
ReplyDeleteEh, they're cute and all, but I think they're a fad anywhere except Morocco.
ReplyDeleteGlad you posted about this. I have had one sitting in my Serena & Lily shopping cart for months now! Love them.
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about this forever. Too pricey for me if it's a fad... but those pictures make me want one even more!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for including Pieces. The poofs have been flying out the door! Let us know if you need any:)
ReplyDeleteI like the pouf! It is fun and interesting. Do you think they are actually comfortable, or just good looking? Who knows! I usually fall in love with looks anyways.
ReplyDeleteI fell in love with these poufs the very first time I saw them, too bad I'm living in the middle of nowhere, otherwise I would totally get one! ;)
ReplyDeleteI still love these -- have several peppered about the house.
ReplyDeleteI think they lend just that touch of casual yet glam exotica that can real up the wham-bam in a room.
If you search on Ebay, you'll find these exact same poufs for about $140. A friend of mine is about to order a pair in hot pink.
Nero says go for it and enjoy the things you love.
Cheers, Alcira

I love that natural toned pouf from Pieces - great find!
ReplyDeleteI don't know about poufs. I think they're completely adorable and if you really love it, then it's not going to go out of style in your house.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I can't imaging sitting on one comfortably - they're just too low to the ground. Especially since they're often touted as "extra seating." So when your guests are all dressed up for a party at your house, you're going to make them have to figure out how to gracefully get down that low? It's like a glorified floor pillow.
This is why I like garden seats. They're sturdy enough to use as an end table and usually tall enough to be proper seating.
My mom brought us a couple back from their last visit to Turkey and we love it. Ours are hard to keep filled to keep the structure looking tall....but our dogs love them. They are a great decorative dog bed. : )
ReplyDeleteWant a low-commitment price? Target will be carrying them this summer as part of their Calypso collection. I think they're about $59!
ReplyDeleteImports from Marrakesh is delighted to be included in your blog...FYI our traditional poufs are $150 to $200.00. Handmade & they last for years!
