The Case of the Missing Headboard

I've been wanting to invest in a headboard for quite some time now. I've found quite a few styles I like, but at the end of the day, I can't seem to commit. Do I go with a splash of color (blush pink! yellow! blue!) or stick with something safe and neutral? Is tufted upholstery on its way out? Is wood going to be super uncomfortable to lean against? What do I do with the photos currently hanging above my bed? All questions that remain unanswered.

Then I saw these two beauuuutiful tiny nuggets of a room and my world was turned upside down. Bedrooms that look perfectly perfect despite not having a proper bed frame and headboard finishing off the space? How is that possible? I've realized it comes down to the petite size of the space and the uber luxe linens (Porthault hearts) and accents (helloooo, blue chandelier) drawing your eye away from the missing headboard.

So now I'm wondering... do I even need one? It's a small room, and the bed is framed nicely by the art and the bedside lamps. Sure the linens are West Elm and Anthropologie, and the lamps are a JCPenny bargain. But they do the trick. And the large Euro shams kind of act like a headboard. Do I invest in a third to really fill the space?

Help!

  1. I love your room exactly the way it is! I think the headboard would eat up that wall and take away from your pretty side tables and walls. Maybe you are way ahead of the times and headboards are on their way out, soon everyone will just want Euro Shams {always my favorite!}

  2. I've had the same dilemma, and I've been struggling to find the right headboard or to even have one at all...so thanks to your ideas I will totally focus more on my accents and not so much in getting that perfect headboard...unless it decides to manifest to me soon! :) So I say stay without it if you want because it looks complete already..

  3. I am on the same boat as you. For awhile we didn't have a headboard and I thought, maybe it's time to get one. However, I've just decided that with the right artwork on the wall and some great side lamps there isn't really a need for one.

  4. I don't think you need it. If you wanted to get one, I'm sure you will choose something tasteful and beautiful. But your euro pillows and the art work do a very good job of framing the space. I like going through the pics of your home for inspiration, and the way you have set up your bed with the pillows is lovely.

  5. I think it looks beautiful the way it is.. the only thing that might help is bedside tables at the same height (love the mismatched look, but the different lamp heights is throwing things off). Love the little wood table.. maybe thrifting for something else in the corner?? Love it without the headboard, and I think a third Eurosham might be too wide.

  6. I agree, I really don't think you need one at all. I'm the exact same way, I had my whole apt. furnished and the headboard was the last thing I bought...I couldn't find one that I LOVED, and I couldn't decide on tufted or wood, or modern or traditional...I wound up going with a West Elm one, but I seriously don't think you even need one, looks great just with the framed pictures.

  7. I too have been debating the headboard question for some time now. I just love your bed how it is now and I think the Euro shams are lovely. I'm always dreamt of a tufted jewel tone velvet headboard though.

  8. Looks great now. I'd add one when you come across something you really love. I used an ottoman as a coffee table until I found the exact right one. It took two years, but this my home includes a lot more "Love, Love, Love" pieces.

  10. I think you're fine without one! Your room looks great. I grew up without a headboard...I didn't know it was odd for a long time. Your room is beautiful!

  11. I think headboards create a more tailored look and anchors the bed. So I vote headboard if you find the right one in your price range.

I do think your bedroom still looks great without a headboard! By the way, I love your bedding :)

  12. I think you need a headboard! In addition to just 'looking' better (in my opinion) I also think that they make the bed more comfortable - none of that things falling off the top or in the crack stuff. And comfort should be the number one requirement for a bed.

    Cheers!

  13. My vote is wait until you find something you love. It looks pretty now, I think it could look prettier with the right headboard...however, I'd wait on it and not force it--if you're anything like me, there are always other places you can spend money in your home now, and maybe the perfect piece is just waiting for you to discover it a few months from now! :)

  14. I know just what you mean. Ultimately, I agree that a headboard anchors the bed and "completes" things, even though I also love the kind of "undone" feelings in bedrooms like those. But for me, it's also more comfortable. However, I think your room looks completely lovely without one as well, and if it doesn't bother you, I wouldn't be in any rush. I agree that the shams can act as one to make things feel a little more finished. If you find one you love, buy it! If not, don't settle just to have one :).

  15. I love your room just the way it is! However, I think a headboard could only add to it as long as it stayed with the neutral colors you already have (aka not bright craziness). With that said, the room still looks amazing without it.

  16. I think you're just fine without one! But I might be biased. I'm totally against headboards. I find them tremendously unnecessary!

  17. Maybe try a semi-permanent solution while you are still figuring it out? There are so many tutorials about the foam over the plywood, and then you can cover it in a light gray or cream fabric that would help keep it from feeling obtrusive. I like my headboard because it has some padding for me to sit and read in bed.

  18. I had the same problem! I decided to forgo a headboard... instead, I bought 2 shams (on sale! Cynthia Rowley! from TJ Maxx!) that complemented my bedding but are a little bolder to provide more of a focal point. I am super happy with how it looks, and know that it will be much easier to change when the mood strikes!
