Emerson in India

A couple of my best friends and I are currently planning a girls trip to Europe in the fall, after the crowds and sky-high prices of summer pass. We are thinking Athens and Istanbul, two cities I've always wanted to visit. But then I saw these photos on Emerson Made's blog from her trip to India and Nepal, and once again, Asia is tugging at my sleeve. I mean, there are monkeys on wires. And the food. Oh, how I looove Indian food. Well, one day I'll make it there. So much to see, so little time.

Have any of you visited Athens or Istanbul? Any recommendations? Do you think that would be a good trip if we spent three nights in each city?

  1. I have always wanted to go to Istanbul go go! and well Athens is great, I lived there 4 years when I was a kid and go every year, not a pretty city in general but the pretty parts are stunning so worth it for sure! Let me know if you need advice as 3 days might be a bit too much for the city as per se

  2. I have always wanted to go to Istanbul!! I can't wait to hear/see everything from your trip. I went to Athens a couple years ago, wasn't crazy about it. Sort of dirty and not so pretty. But it may have been cleaned up since then. Otherwise Rome and Barcelona are incredible choices. I also have wanted to go to Prague.

  3. I went to Istanbul a couple of years ago and definitely recommend it. There is so much to see, it's really an incredible experience. You could easily fill three days visiting amazing places like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and more.

  5. I was in Athens for one day in 2009, part of a cruise holiday. I found it breathtaking - but again, I was just there for one day. It was a scorcher, well above 40 degrees. That walk up to the Parthenon was amazing. Looking out over a hazy Athens was worth it.

  6. I went on a trip to Europe about 4 years ago and we only spent a day in Athens. Admittedly, I was a little over ruins since we had just been to Rome and I was also comparing it to Santorini which we were coming back from, but I found Athens to be pretty crappy. Maybe I was in the wrong part.

  7. Istanbul is a really cool city, so you should definitely go there.

I studied abroad in Greece and we spent a weekend in Athens and that was far too long. Other then going to the Acropolis, it is pretty boring. I'd say if you want to go to Greece spend a day in Athens and then go to one or more of the islands.

athens can be tough- but cool and a lot of fun. it is interesting and in some parts beautiful, but not as easy or as polished as other european cities. we stayed at an awesome hotel called the fresh hotel. great roof top pool and safe, clean and comfortable. we walked everywhere which made for some fun discoveries. i would recommend no more than 3 days there...

  11. that sounds so fun! my husband and i are going to Turkey in the very early fall, too! Istanbul first (so we're also trying to figure out some places to stay and things to do) and then we're doing a 7-day bike tour in Cappadocia - which I hear is beautiful if you have time to go there after Istanbul. so excited! Athens is definitely another destination on my travel wish list and india comes in right behind Turkey - i'm hoping we can go there on the next big trip.

i have heard great things about the atmosphere and design of this hotel in Istanbul: http://www.thesofahotel.com/ - but we are probably going to stay in a nice hostel to save money!

  12. You really don't need 3 days to get around Athens & Istanbul. A day and half is max. I would recommend spending the remaining time touring the Greek islands & possibly Antalya while in Turkey.

  14. These photos are absolutely gorgeous and just so exotic ~ I haven't been to Athens or Istanbul, but I also feel the tug of Asia at my sleeve. I hope you have an amazing trip, wherever it takes you!

  15. Istanbul's the type of city where after three nights, you'll think 'oh wth - let's make it a wk.' I did a 10-day in Turkey a few yrs ago - the next time I go, it will be for several months.

I will also say that Turkey has the best desserts I have ever had, anywhere, ever. You will walk into any bakery, and YOU WILL DIE. Separately, if you fancy yourself some dondurma, do NOT go to the MADO branch in Sultanahmet (historical/tourist hub) - I went to the branch in Taksim Square (shopping!) and, oh..
